The Nature Reserve of Castelvecchio is a vast forest area that extends for about 700 hectares between Gambassi Terme, San Gimignano and Volterra. The Mediterranean forest covers gentle limestone hills and steep crevices where flow some streams. This is the case of the Botro di Castelvecchio and the Botro di Libaia.

Given the variety of flora and fauna, the reserve is ideal for hiking and nature walks. The whole family can have fun exploring the area and discovering the traces of the animals that inhabit it.
One of the most interesting hiking trails on foot or mountain biking is the one that reaches the abandoned village of Castelvecchio.

The ruins of this small settlement of ancient origin, though hidden by vegetation, are often a great surprise for hiking enthusiasts. Today, surrounded by silence, the village developed on a single road on which the foundations of the main buildings can still be seen.

In particular, you can visit the 15th century tower and the Church of San Frediano. The view that you can enjoy from the tower is absolutely amazing: it dominates the nature of the surrounding hills and gorges.
